Denmark's Tech Ambassador, Casper Klynge, is resigning from his post.

Since September 2017, Klynge has sought to gain good relationships with the tech giants of Silicon Valley in his role as "tech ambassador", and as the first in the world with such a title.

Not having made any noticeable impact on the tech or startup community, Klynge will now take up a top position with Microsoft.

Klynge's appointment, and the creation of the position, was part of a plan from the former Danish government in the field of technology. Why the former Danish government chose Casper Klynge, a previous ambassador to Indonesia, to take on this role, has been a source of puzzlement to the Danish Tech industry.

The Ambition
The ambition was to have the ambassador cultivate close relationships with large tech companies such as Google, Facebook, Apple and others, so that Denmark would be at the forefront of the industry's development.

Klynge Moves On
On March 1st 2020, Casper Klynge will move from Silicon Valley to Brussels, which will be his new home. From there he will take up his new role as part of Microsoft's global leadership team.

"The digital age will offer very significant societal changes, and there is an urgent need for closer cooperation between the technology industry and authorities," said Klynge.

It is a perplexing statement, as Klynge is leaving a position that enabled him to do just that.

Danish Foreign Minister Jeppe Kofod does not wish to comment on Klynge's job change, writes the Danish news site DR.

A New Danish Tech Ambassador?
It is currently unknown who, if anyone, will take over the role of "Tech Ambassador". However, the Danish Foreign Ministry's director of organisation and citizen service, Erik Brøgger Rasmussen, writes in an email to DR that "the technological development will continue, and as so the technological agenda will continue to be relevant".

Tech Ambassador

  • Denmark was the first country in the world to create a "tech ambassador" job position in 2017.

  • The ambition was to have the ambassador cultivate close relationships with large tech companies such as Google, Facebook, Apple and others, so that Denmark would be at the forefront of the industry's development.

  • The job position was created as part of a larger foreign policy strategy focusing on the IT giants of what was dubbed technological diplomacy.
